Volunteers

Our volunteers are an integral part of Orange City Area Health System’s commitment to quality, compassionate patient care. Volunteers truly make a difference  every day – helping patients and visitors, working in the Gift Garden, serving as escorts and drivers, sharing their gifts with our patrons and employees, and serving our nursing homes, retirement community, and Hospice patients and their families with their time.

We would not be successful without our volunteers who give so selflessly of their time and services to Orange City Area Health System.

Our Volunteers Go Above & Beyond!

The first thing you notice is a black logo vest. As you get a little closer, you spot a warm smile beginning to appear. One step closer and you see bright, caring eyes focused on you. The pace quickens toward you and you are warmly greeted with, “Hi, how can I help you?” You feel assured, less anxious – like you have met an unexpected friend.

This scene repeats itself many times every day at Orange City Area Health System – whether needing assistance at the information desk, shopping in the Gift Garden, or visiting a patient. OCAHS volunteers direct, escort, befriend, and offer their special kind of compassion and care to our patients, guests, and staff. Our volunteers are here to offer an extra layer of care and support to those at OCAHS. While our volunteers do not perform clinical functions, the work they do allows our staff to provide the medical expertise they are highly trained to perform. Behind the scenes volunteers who knit, crochet, embroider and sew, also provide their special touch. Volunteers also have a presence in our community through services such as wellness clinics and blood pressure screenings.

Recently OCAHS received this comment on a patient satisfaction survey: “As I waited, I watched a volunteer spend a few minutes with a visibly upset young mom & child. Mom was crying and the volunteer embraced her with a ‘grandma’ hug.”

Wonderful to see that kind of compassion! The gift of giving is amazingly powerful!

Additional Volunteers Needed:

Many of the members on the OCAHS volunteer team work routinely in many capacities. However, if you are a member of the team and haven’t quite found your niche or volunteer opportunity within the health system – we have many opportunities available for you to consider. At this time we are currently in need of additional volunteers for the Information Desk, Gift Garden, and Surgery Waiting Reception Area.

If you already volunteer in one of these areas and would like additional shifts, are interested in training to work in one of these areas or know of someone who might be interested, please contact me at 712-737-5349 or [email protected]

We all know that the best avenue for finding these extraordinary people is by Word of Mouth. So talk it up and invite your friends and family to be part of our “super” volunteer team at OCAHS!

Thanks!

Volunteer Opportunities

Gift Garden

Numerous volunteers are needed for all areas of the gift shop, which is run by the Auxiliary – from cashiering to making coffee, stocking shelves to delivering merchandise to patients.

Information Desk

You can help us welcome patients, families, and visitors upon their arrival to the health system, and help direct or escort them to their destination.

Office/Clerical

Volunteers make a real difference in our office environments by assisting staff with typing, filing, preparing mailers, and making copies.

Surgery Waiting Receptionist

Waiting for a loved one in surgery can be daunting. Volunteers offer a warm, welcoming, and helpful environment. They also escort patients to their surgery suite, and family members to the consult room or other areas.

Hospice

Volunteers are the backbone and sustaining force behind a successful hospice program, providing personal care patient support, spiritual support, homemaking, journaling, bereavement support, and many other areas.

Senior Care

If you have a gift of caring, you can read to sight-impaired residents, lead hymn sings, serve refreshments, play games, help with decorating and events, and just provide comfort and warmth to senior care residents.
