The basics of ATVs and safety

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) or utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) are often a helpful way to get work done around the yard or farm.  They can also be an enjoyable way to spend time with friends and family.  However, these vehicles need to be respected and used properly.  Nearly 200 ATV crashes occur in Iowa every year.  Since 1985, over 8000 ATV-related deaths have occurred in the US.  Following these basic tips can help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Wear a helmet and protective clothing.  Head injuries are the most common ATV- related injury, and the leading cause of death in ATV crashes.  Wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirts, gloves, and boots can protect you from scrapes, burns, or puncture type injuries.

Avoid paved roads.  ATVs are designed with a high center of gravity.  This makes them roll easily especially on paved surfaces.  The tires are not made to grip and release paved surfaces like car tires do.

Slow down.  Did you know Iowa new law has a max speed of 35 mph?  Speed is dangerous and can cause you to lose control.  Be safe … take your time.  Never race another vehicle.

Ride alone.  ATVs were designed as one-rider vehicles.  Having passengers on ATVs make it much easier to flip or roll over, especially on uneven surfaces.

Have a plan.  Always tell someone where you are going, and when you plan to be back.  This way, if you happen to have an accident or a breakdown your family and friends can easily locate you.

Drive Sober.  Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  These things impair your judgment and reaction times, increasing your risk of severe injury.

Over 18.  Iowa’s new law also restricts drivers to those over the age of 18, with a valid driver’s license.  Most accidents occur due to children driving ATVs that are made for adults, driving too fast, in conditions that are unsafe, and being inexperienced.

Take an ATV safety course.  Knowledge can reduce your risk of serious injury.

Know the law.  As of July 1, 2022 Iowa has new ATV and UTV laws.  Visit this link for a summary of the new law from Sioux County Sherriff:  https://siouxcountysheriff.com/2022/06/22/iowa-changes-atv-utv-laws-effective-july-1/
