ORANGE CITY AREA HEALTH SYSTEM RECEIVES SAFETY AWARDS
Employee safety best practices translate to patient and community safety

Liza occ health safety awards june 2015Orange City Area Health System (OCAHS), led by its Occupational Health team, received two distinguished awards for employee safety in May as part of the ServiShare workers’ compensation program. ServiShare, a division of Iowa Hospital Association, presented awards to Iowa hospitals who achieved certain employee safety benchmarks, based on data from federally-mandated OSHA logs. OCAHS was one of six hospitals to earn the Safety Performance Award, and one of nine hospitals to earn the Return to Work Award. The health system, which employs 500 people on several campuses, had only four OSHA reportable injuries with no lost days, for one of the lowest incident rates in the ServiShare program. “Our experience with our employee safety translates to useful tools that we can provide our customers in the community as well,” reported Liza Schouten, RN, the health system’s Occupational Health Supervisor. “This indicates we are on the right path and can pass that on to businesses and individuals we serve.”

Orange City Area Health System offers occupational health services for its employees and also for the community, including pre-employment requirements, workers’ compensation case management, on-site workspace assessments, health assessments, pulmonary function testing, wellness screens, breath alcohol and drug testing, training, and more. Occupational health services are located in the Medical Office Building on the health system’s main campus in Orange City. OCAHS is a comprehensive health system consisting of four family medicine clinics, sports medicine clinic, behavioral health clinic, critical access hospital, home health and hospice, and a senior care campus. It was recently named among the Top 20 critical access hospitals in the nation for the second consecutive year.
